STATEMENT FROM THE AMERICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE IN MYANMAR

FEBRUARY 15, 2021 -- AMCHAM Myanmar is deeply concerned about the draft Cybersecurity bill shared with telecommunications businesses on February 9. As written, this draft is inconsistent with international standards and best practices associated with cybersecurity laws.

AMCHAM Myanmar is particularly concerned with any law that impedes the free flow of information and jeopardizes data privacy. Additionally, restrictions on the storage of data and threats of legal penalties or service blockages for failure to comply will negatively impact all businesses and future investments that use internet services in Myanmar.

Supporting the free flow of information is an essential condition for businesses and communities to operate in Myanmar.

We also take this opportunity to reiterate our previous statement made on February 4: “We unequivocally call upon all engaged stakeholders to allow for unrestricted access to information across all telecommunications systems available in Myanmar to support the free flow of information.”
