AMCHAM Myanmar Statement on Lifting of Sanctions
December 14, 2015
AMCHAM Myanmar is encouraged by the recent announcement lifting trade sanctions in Myanmar for the next six months. The lifting of these sanctions will allow U.S. companies to resume trading through the main shipping port and airport in Yangon and remove certain obstacles, particularly in regards to financial transactions for companies seeking to do business with these entities. The Chamber continues to urge the U.S. government to review the sanctions list, and wherever possible, remove companies and individuals which may no longer need to be on the list. Such actions help provide a level playing field in Myanmar for U.S. companies who currently have limited options for business partners, incur significant costs associated with lengthy compliance reviews and face a lack of banks willing to engage in financial transactions in Myanmar.
