AMCHAM Launches Myanmar Chapter

On October 31, 2013, in Yangon, American and American affiliated companies launched an AMCHAM Myanmar Chapter. The 50 founding companies were joined by U.S. Ambassador Derek Mitchell and members of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry. The Chapter members represent a diverse collection of industries and nationalities, but share a common goal to expand commerce between Myanmar and the U.S. and operate according to the highest international business standards. The launch of AMCHAM Myanmar is a significant milestone in U.S. commercial engagement, and I congratulate all of those involved. I look forward to a strong partnership with the new chapter. My team at the U.S. Embassy and I are ready to work with AmCham members in order to secure a leading role for U.S. companies in this rapidly changing business environment, said U.S. Ambassador Mitchell. At the event, the Myanmar Chapter named Ambassador Mitchell as honorary president and Mariano Vela as President of Chevron Myanmar, as Chapter president. Mr. Vela remarked, It is an honor to be named president of this vibrant group of companies. The Chapter will encourage U.S.-Myanmar commerce, promote high standards for doing business, and provide valued employment for the people of Myanmar. One of the Chapters first goals will be to advocate a Chamber of Commerce law with the Myanmar government, which would allow the Chapter to become an independent American Chamber of Commerce in Myanmar. The Chapter also plans to form several committees for members to collaborate on business and social issues, such as law, human resources, and corporate social responsibility. Supporting education will also be a Chapter focus. More information about the AMCHAM Myanmar Chapter, including how to become a member, is available on the AMCHAM website, at www.amchammyanmar.com/. AMCHAM thanks Chevron for generously sponsoring the event.
