When Myanmar first opened its economy to foreign investors in 2012, Japan Tobacco Inc. (JTI) was one of the first international companies to apply for and be granted a permit for the manufacturing of cigarettes from the Myanmar Investment Commission. This enabled JTI to establish Myanmar Japan Tobacco Company Limited (MJT) and to build a factory here in Yangon. MJT is a company incorporated in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar since 2012. MJT produces the internationally known brands of cigarettes, Mevius (formerly known as Mild Seven) and Winston, for the Myanmar domestic market and also exports its products within the Asia Pacific region. Over 150 new direct and indirect jobs have been created thus far with additional opportunities anticipated to follow in the coming years.
