On 7 June 2019, the Union Parliament enacted Law No.
20/2019 otherwise known as the Tax Administration Law (“TAL”). The TAL is one
of the most significant pieces of tax legislation being introduced in Myanmar
as part of the Internal Revenue Department’s tax reform program. In this
presentation, we will discuss the key features of the new TAL, which include
changes to tax filing and payment procedures, the new retention period of
maintaining documents, changes to re-assessment of tax returns and the appeal
process, and penalties applicable to instances of non-compliance, among others.
The presentation will also highlight the major considerations that all businesses
must be aware of before this new Law enters into effect on 1 October 2019 or
