Law of 2019: Broadening the Liability of Manufacturers, Wholesalers, and
Distributors for Defective GoodsThe
Consumer Protection Law of 2019 was promulgated in early 2019 to improve
consumer protection in Myanmar. The law seeks to regulate the liability of
manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors and others involved in the supply
chain for defective goods, which until now has been largely regulated by
colonial era tort law which in large part was un-enforced and insufficient to
appropriately protect the rights of consumers in the modern economy. The
presentation will discuss the new regime governing liability for defective
goods and will highlight certain risks present in the broad wording of the law
which all business involved in the supply chain should be informed of to
effectively control risk.
